Jack was one of the few junior officers who has attended command school while at Starfleet Academy, as it is normally reserved for senior officers. This skill allowed him to take command of the bridge when ordered to by the commanding officer. However, as a newly promoted lieutenant, he lacked seniority in the chain of command while serving aboard the Galaxy Class USS Republic (NCC-76241), and therefore, was rarely forced into the command chair. This was perfectly fine with Jack, as he had little ambition to become a leader at the time, and only did so when he had to. This role as a reluctant leader sometimes made him look like a complainer.  While Jack was assigned to the Galaxy Class USS Republic prior to it's destruction, he was reassigned elsewhere in Starfleet after the Remnant Attacks of stardate 58851.
